Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)

PSHE at Dorset House School plays a vital role in supporting pupils’ personal development, wellbeing and preparation for life beyond the Prep School. Through a carefully structured and age‑appropriate programme, pupils are encouraged to develop confidence, resilience, empathy and a strong sense of responsibility.

Our PSHE curriculum is designed to complement academic learning, ensuring that pupils are equipped with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to navigate the challenges and opportunities of the modern world.

A Progressive and Age‑Appropriate Programme

PSHE is taught progressively throughout the school, building on prior learning and reflecting pupils’ developing maturity. Topics are introduced sensitively and revisited in increasing depth as children move through the school, ensuring understanding is secure and relevant.

Themes include:

  • Relationships and friendships
  • Emotional wellbeing and mental health
  • Respect, kindness and inclusion
  • Personal safety and decision‑making
  • Health, wellbeing and growing up

Lessons provide opportunities for discussion, reflection and questioning in a safe and supportive environment.

Supporting Confidence and Wellbeing

A key focus of PSHE at Dorset House is helping pupils to understand themselves and others. Children are encouraged to express their thoughts appropriately, listen to different viewpoints and develop strategies for managing emotions and challenges.

PSHE lessons support pupils in developing self‑awareness, confidence and positive coping strategies, reinforcing the school’s strong pastoral ethos.

Learning Through Specialist Input

To enhance learning and ensure pupils receive accurate and relevant information, Dorset House welcomes external speakers and specialists as part of the PSHE programme. These sessions enrich classroom teaching and allow pupils to engage with experts in specific areas.

External input includes age‑appropriate talks and workshops on topics such as:

  • Online safety and digital responsibility, helping pupils understand how to stay safe and make positive choices online
  • Growing up and personal development, delivered sensitively and in line with pupils’ age and stage

These sessions are carefully planned, led by trusted professionals and supported by school staff, ensuring consistency with the school’s values and pastoral care.

Open Communication and a Safe Space to Learn

PSHE lessons are taught in an atmosphere of trust and respect, where pupils feel comfortable asking questions and sharing ideas. Clear boundaries are established to ensure discussions remain appropriate, inclusive and supportive.

The school works closely with parents to ensure transparency and understanding, recognising the importance of partnership in supporting children’s personal development.

Preparing Pupils for Life Beyond Dorset House

Through PSHE, pupils at Dorset House develop the skills and understanding needed to become confident, respectful and responsible young people. The programme supports preparation for senior school and beyond, helping pupils to navigate change, build healthy relationships and make informed choices.
